After a great experience in the Napa/Sonoma Valleys a couple of years ago, we got hooked on different wines. We thought the only difference in wines was red or white. Wow! Did we learn.
Our Wisconsin wine tour (there are 42 wineries listed in the wine association booklet, but probably over 70 in the state) in Elkhorn, WI at the Apple Barn Orchard and Winery. Tasting their fruit wines, we found we liked the Apple Crisp and Blueberry Wines. Our first venture into non-grape wines. Pretty good.
We stopped in Delavan (Staller Vineyard, recent Gold Medal winners in New York competition), Milton (Newleaf Winery), New Glarus (New Glarus Primrose Winery, we landed in the middle of the annual PolkaFest), Highland (Spurgeon Vineyards and Winery, situated in one of the most beautiful areas of Wisconsin) and spent the night in Viroqua after a visit to the Vernon Winery just outside of town.
Each of the wineries offered free tastings. It's a good thing they were about an hour apart. Traveling through the soutwest corner of Wisconsin is wonderful. The hills near the Wisconsin River and the bluffs near the Mississippi River are awesome. Even if you don't care to do wine tastings, it's one of the most beautiful areas we've gone through, and we've traveled a lot.
The next day, after a great breakfast at the Heritage House Bed & Breakfast, found us on the way to Muscoda (Weggy Winery) and continued our Sunday afternoon in New Lisbon at the Burr Ridge Winery, whose new retail store is in the Napa Valley tradition. They also seemed to have the largest selection of wines. The Baca Noir became a quick favorite.
Finally we stopped at one of the most famous wineries in Wisconsin, the Wollersheim Winery in Praire Du Sac, WI. Beautiful vineyards surround their retail store, built in 2007, with a greeter at the door and a contingent of helpful clerks ready to answer any questions. Just a little northwest of Madison, Wollersheim is a Wisconsin gem.
It was a great getaway and a fun way to celebrate our anniversary. Looking forward to enjoying our purchases.
See you soon! Gene
